The circle of 5ths is a way of organizing the notes in the 12-tone scale of equal-tempered pitches. In other words, these are all the notes that we commonly use in western music. The circle of 5ths is also a common tool and visual system for understanding the relationships of tones in musical theory, composition, and chord/note relationships.

After the octave, the 5th is the next most complex interval which makes up the fundamental harmonic series, the basis of all musical relationships. The 5th is a fundamental component of most all modern and western music.

This recording of the circle of 5ths is played on a piano, tuned in equal temperament, and so by its nature, will not be in perfect harmony with the harmonic note relationships as they exist in nature. The piano works as a good approximation, and translates the spacious quality of the relationships well.

Listened to as a continuous cycle, the expansive and meditative effect of the sounds takes the listener on a comprehensive journey through the 12 fundamental tones.

My hope is that this might be a relaxing and spacious set of tones to listen to, good with walks and morning tea and the like, and if you perhaps wish to meditate further into the nature of frequency, vibration, and the relationships of pitches, that this might help you in that exploration.
